The Costa Concordia was carrying more than 4,200 people (January 13th, 2012) when it hit a reef off the Tuscan island of Giglio when Captin Schettino made an unauthorised deviation from the cruise ship’s programmed course, apparently as a favour to his chief waiter, who hailed from the island. One week later and the cruise ship is still lying on its side off the island coastline, with 8 people confirmed dead already and more missing.
